The New York Yankees have appeared in all fourteen Subway Series games, amassing an impressive 11–3 record, including an astounding 9 straight wins between 1921 and 1953.
Since 1997, the term Subway Series has also been applied informally to inter-league play during the regular season between the Yankees and National League New York Mets, although the term is still most commonly associated with World Series play.
The Mets–Yankees rivalry is the latest incarnation of the Subway Series, the competition between New York City’s Major League Baseball teams, the American League New York Yankees and National League New York Mets.
Until Inter-league play started, the two teams had only met in exhibition games. Since the inception of inter-league play the two teams have met every regular season since 1997, and since 1999 they have met six times each season, playing two three-game series, one in each team’s ballpark.
They have made the postseason in the same year three times: 1999, 2000, and 2006, and faced off in the 2000 World Series. Analysts of the game have commented that the rivalry is the best reason for inter-league play.
